A study in God's Word

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." Col. 3:15

Let, v. To permit; to allow; to suffer...

hmmm, seems to me we are being called here to allow God's peace to rule our hearts. Not the usual way I would look at it. Instead of trying to get peace we are called to simply allow it.

Peace, n. Freedom from agitation or disturbance by the passions as from fear, terror, anger, anxiety or the like; quietness of mind; tranquillity; calmness; quiet of conscience.

I'd say this is the exact opposite of our natural state. And I'd also say it's an amazing thought that we are simply to LET ourselves have this peace.

Rule, n. Government; sway; empire; control; supreme command or authority.

So we are to allow ourselves to be free from fear and anxiety, and we are to let it have control or supreme authority in our lives, in our decisions, and in our hearts. WOW!

Heart, n. The seat of the affections and passions, as of love, joy, grief, enmity, courage, pleasure etc.

Ok, so we have MANY thoughts and feelings pass through our hearts, but peace should be the one thing that rules.

Thankful, a. Grateful; impressed with a sense of kindness received, and ready to acknowledge it.

I'd say if we are thankful we will also have peace. =) Amen!

  1. great post!
I have been doing a study (or I was a couple weeks ago, but stopped... need to start again) on the fruits of the spirit with Josiah and I was amazed at some of the definitions of words, different than I had believed they meant... very eye opening for sure!
